The Justice PAC by La Defensa, a project of Tides Advocacy

The La Defensa Justice PAC is the first of its kind and the only PAC dedicated to supporting truly progressive candidates for judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court. The PAC will focus on culturally-informed political education for varying demographics, especially first time voters, under-funded communities, and the LGBTGI+ community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Canvassing Team Member is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary position that supports the Justice PAC by La Defensa across Los Angeles County to inform the public about judicial candidates known as The Defenders of Justice, with voter education and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts for LA County. The scope of responsibilities will include, but is not limited to: direct community engagement, relational organizing to help mobilize communities for upcoming local elections, phone banking, text banking, and working with other canvassers. The individual is expected to work 20 hours per week and reports directly to the Justice PAC team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Field Outreach
  • Educate and engage citizens on the upcoming judicial elections through door-to-door canvassing.
  • Handout literature to LA County residents, drop off door hangers, and other duties as assigned.
  • Digital Outreach
  • In-county communications with voters (e.g. phone banking, text banking, email, and other modes)

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other duties as requested by the Justice PAC team.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Strong work history in canvassing and/or organizing with movement groups, non-profit organizations, political candidates, ballot measures or political parties preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, familiarity working with diverse communities preferred. The canvassing team member must be able to find reliable transportation across Los Angeles County, show up prepared and on time on outreach days, and be flexible with scheduling.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Canvassing Team works closely with the Justice PAC officers and collaborates with staff, contractors, vendors, and coalition partners.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must have the physical ability to move boxes weighing 20 or 30 pounds each 10 to 15% of work time. Travel will be required.

Canvassing Team must be available for frequent and regular travel within the county, to participate in field work, organizing, events, and other work as needed. This position requires access to reliable modes of transportation and access to a smartphone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This is an onsite position that requires travel within Los Angeles County. Work hours will vary and may include night or weekend assignments as required.

COMPENSATION:
Starting at $18/Hourly. Depending on experience.
